| First trimester screening for Trisomy 13 and Trisomy 18 syndromes - Consultation CLOSEDNational policy proposalThe consultation period starts on Monday 7th November and ends Monday 12th December 2011.NHS FASP are pleased to announce that the consultation for the policy proposal 'First trimester screening for T13 and T18 syndromes in pregnancy' is now open. All stakeholders and professionals are given the opportunity to comment on proposed revisions to existing policies or new policies. After Down's syndrome, trisomy 18 (T18) is the second most common autosomal aneuploidy with trisomy 13 (T13) the third. Both syndromes are associated with increased maternal age and include a range of complex abnormalities that result in life long physical and mental impairment, miscarriage or stillbirth. The policy proposal explores moving screening for T13 and T18 into the first trimester, because these syndromes can be identified as a bi-product of first trimester ‘Combined Screening' for Down's syndrome which, in respects to reproductive choice, is earlier than the recommended policy for screening using second trimester sonographic detection. All feedback will be taken into consideration during the final policy creation process.
